You’ve probably heard the name SSL 4000 thrown around if you’ve been in the mixing game for a minute. This the name of a mixing console that has been used by some of the biggest pros like Andy Wallace and Chris Lord-Alge, to name a few—and for good reason. The punch, the warmth, the analog vibe—it’s all there.

But what really makes it stand out, especially in plugin form?

In my latest video, I break down the SSL 4000 E Channel Strip and show you how to use it in your mixes to get that signature sound.

Whether you’re working with the SSL version, Plugin Alliance, or UAD, I’ll walk you through:

  • How to use the five zones—from input to EQ, filters, and dynamics.

  • The difference between the different EQ circuits, and why each one brings its own flavor.

  • Tips to dial in your mixes, from compression and gating to using the internal sidechain for extra punch on your drums.

Oh, and I’ll also show you how to switch up the signal flow to really get what you want 👌

So, if you’re ready to know all about working with this channel strip with confidence, go watch the video.

Once you’ve had a chance to watch, drop a comment on YouTube and let me know which SSL version you’re using—or if there’s another analog emulation type plugin you want me to cover next.

Talk soon,

Chris

P.S. If you’re still getting the hang of compression, don’t forget to grab my free Compression Fundamentals Guide—the link’s in the video description.

It'll help you lock in those dynamics up!
